History and use
This brand of cards was issued to British forces during the First World War to aid in teaching the modern semaphore system. Semaphore flag communication is a system for conveying information by means of hand held flags. The system is commonly used in the naval environment and dates back to the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

These cards were published and printed by Gale & Polden of London, Aldershot and Portsmouth in the United Kingdom. This company is renowned for producing royal, military and government printed material.

This object was donated by the Marks family. The Marks family was a prominent Brisbane family that made significant contributions to the fields of science and medicine.
