History and use
A mezzo-soprano with the New South Wales National Opera Company, Helen (Kerr) Belton wore this striking ivory and gold satin/rayon brocade wedding dress with matching veil, designed and made by Victorian fashion house, Lucy Secor, for her wedding to jazz singer, pianist and amateur actor, Brian Belton at Our Lady Help of Christians Church, Epping, Sydney, in 1957. Helen complemented her dress with a pair of long white gloves.

Established in 1922, Lucy Secor was one of Melbourne’s best-known fashion houses, specialising in sophisticated, glamourous, ready-to-wear garments noted for the quality of their fabrics and detailed workmanship. By the 1950s, Lucy Secor, under the management of Mr W L Cann and Miss A J M Cann, had launched stores and outlets across Australia and New Zealand.

The Brisbane branch of Lucy Secor opened in July 1925 and was situated on the first floor of the original T & G Building on the corner of Queen and Albert Streets. Purchased ‘off-the-rack’ at Lucy Secor’s Sydney store, Helen’s dress cost 25 pounds, a seemingly extravagant price at a time when Brian’s wage as a bank clerk was 17 pounds per week.
