History and use
The “Joh for Canberra” or “Joh for PM” federal election campaign was run in 1987 by Queensland Premier Joh Bjelke-Petersen. The campaign was promoted widely in the lead up to the federal election, however Bjelke-Petersen did not, in the end, run as a candidate. This t-shirt represents the marketing devices used during the campaign, which included “Joh for PM” bumper stickers and flyers.

Sir Johannes "Joh" Bjelke-Petersen was the longest-serving Premier of Queensland, holding office from 1968 to 1987. This was a period of unprecedented economic growth for Queensland, however Bjelke-Petersen’s conservative values polarised opinion. His political longevity and his leadership of a government that, in its latter years, was the subject of high-profile corruption inquiries made him one of the best-known political figures in twentieth-century Australia.

This t-shirt was purchased by the donor in Roma, at the "Easter in the Country" event 1987. It is signed by the Premier who was a guest of honour, presenting awards to the winners of the goat races.
