Description
Roman pottery mould-made, pipe clay head. Head is largely complete, with ca 30% of the left side of the forehead and hair missing. A woman is depicted looking directly ahead, with wavy or curled hair and possible hat or aural decoration. An incomplete portion of larger representation of the goddess Diana.

History and use
Clay heads of dieties, such as these, have been found in habitation, trade and religious sites in Roman Britain. Representations of Venus, the goddess of love; Dea Nutrix, the nursing goddess; Minerva, goddess of the arts, wisdom and war; Diana, goddess of moon and hunting, and Juno, goddess of the women of Rome suggest a religious or symbolic purpose.
