History and use
Sampler made by the donor's moter, Hilda Tate (nee Robertson) in 1918 at the age of 11 while a student at Belmont State School. Mrs Tate went on to become a professional dressmaker at Lucy Secor's Brisbane boutique, which she left when she was married in 1935. Mrs Tate also enjoyed crochet, cross-stitch and other needlework activities in her spare time.
Samplers are useful as documents in the examination of girls' education and the social expectations transmitted through the education system. Needlework samplers retained their place in girls' education well into the twentieth century, physical expressions of a definition of respectability that was based on the `feminine ideal' of the nineteenth century.
