History and use
The wedding dress belonged to Ernestine (Nesta) Roberta Barbara Drury who married into the Marks family. Nesta married the son of Elizabeth and Charles Ferdinand Marks. Her wedding to Edward Oswald (Ted or E.O.) Marks took place at St Peters, Eaton Square in London on 8th July 1914. The couple were childhood sweethearts and friends.
In 1913, Nesta and Ted were engaged to be married. Before the wedding, Ted Marks was living in Dublin, Ireland where he was studying medicine. Nesta was still in Brisbane and the couple had arranged their wedding over written correspondence. Nesta travelled from Brisbane to London for their marriage which occurred 20 days before the declaration of the First World War.
Mr and Mrs T.O. Marks returned to Australia in 1920 with their young daughter Elizabeth Nesta (Pat) Marks. The wedding dress was one of the personal belongings brought to Queensland by Nesta when the family arrived.
