History and use
This object is a representative example of a Chinese market garden wheelbarrow. The Chinese in Australia produced market gardens when mining became less profitable from the 1870s onwards.

Wheelbarrows were distinctively designed for use in these gardens, of which this is a good example. This barrow is therefore a signature item for the story of the Chinese in Australia, even though the history of this particular barrow is not known.
