History and use
This shell fragment was among the items collected by Queensland soldier Herbert William Homer while he served as a stretcher bearer at Gallipoli from September 1915 until the December evacuation that year. Private Homer was awarded a Military Medal for this role, and a Meritorious Service Medal for his actions on the Somme in 1916. Herbert Homer died of wounds in June 1917.
