Janet Walker

Biography
Mrs Janet Walker, Adelaide Street, Brisbane. Janet Walker was the leading woman's clothing designer in colonial Brisbane. Many prominent Queensland families were dressed by her. Records indicate that her first premises were located in the Central Arcade in Queen Street in 1882. In 1892 she entered into partnership with the milliner, Margaret Caldwell, and together they established the 'Ladies Emporium' in Adelaide Street. This business was so successful that they re-modelled and expanded the premises three times between 1896 and 1900. Despite the success of the business Mrs Walker closed the Emporium in 1900 due to ill health. Following her recovery she opened a small shop in the same building and remained there until 1919. In the same year she entered into partnership with Mrs Lade, another dressmaker, and together they opened a store on the third floor of the Courier Building in Queen Street. She remained there until her retirement in 1938.
