F.E. Barbat and Sons

Biography
F.E. Barbat & Sons was an engineering and foundry works, located in North Ipswich in Queensland. Felix Barbat purchased the company in 1901. It was an existing business called Phoenix engineering Company, that had been started by Messrs. F.G. Springall and J. Frost in the 1880s. Felix Barbat and his five sons ran the company; Percy August, Felix John, Albert, Arthur and Reginald.

The business was located in Lowry Street, North Ipswich and covered four acres, including a railway siding that ran right into the works. By 1913 they also had a sawmill at Coominya. The company had significant contracts with the Queensland Railway for production of rolling stock. They almost worked on bridges, stell tanks and structures, waterworks and ?? for local government and private firms. ??? The company also had a railway wagon works at Bundamba, from ???
Son Percy, P.A. Barbat, was the proprietor of this branch of the business.

An important branch of the company's business was the manufacture of the 'Acme' corn husker, sheller and bagger. There were 4 models, The No.1 (400 bushels per hour capacity), the No. 2 (100 bushels per hour capacity), the No.3 (50 to 80 bushels per hour capacity), No. 3A (110 to 120 bushels per hour capacity), No. 4 (30 to 50 bushels perhour capacity). These machines were extremely popular and they often had trouble keeping up with demand. Messrs Cribb and Foote held the sole rights of distributing the machines and have selling agents in North Queensland, Messrs. Smellie and Co, and in Sydney, Messrs. R. Hornsby and Sons.
