Bengal Chutney Co

Biography
In the early 1900s Arthur and James McDonald began the ‘Bengal Chutney Company’ from their house at Birkdale/Wellington Point. The house was originally built in 1891 by James Pink, who was Chairman of the Cleveland Divisional Board at the time. The house became known as 'The Palms'associated with subsequent owner South Brisbane postmaster, Mr Peter James McDonald and his family in 1896. His sons Arthur and James started the Bengal Chutney Company at the turn of the century from The Palms home, making chutney from local mangoes. A factory was established in East Brisbane in the early 1900s and the product became known as Palms Chutney, and was a popular staple in Australian pantries. From 1927 Palms Chutney was packed by the Bengal Chutney Co, at premises in Wellington Road, East Brisbane, and was known to Queenslanders for many years. Palm Chutney was made from mango and papaws, and is recognized as being an exceedingly high grade. Another Wellington Point developer and businessman, Alexander James Lamont also had interest in the Bengal Chutney Company and his son Harry Lamont was manager of the company from 1905.
