Kevin Rudd

Biography
Kevin Rudd was elected Prime Minister of Australia in 2007.

Rudd was born in Nambour, Queensland and raised by his parents Albert Rudd and Margaret Rudd (née DeVere) on a dairy farm in Eumundi. The family left the farm after Albert died, Kevin was just 11 years old.

Kevin Rudd joined the Australian Labor Party in 1972 at the age of 15. He completed a BA (Hons) degree at the Australian National University, before joining the Department of Foreign Affairs in 1981. He and his wife, Thérèse Rein, spent the next few years in Australian embassies in Stockholm, Sweden and Beijing.

They returned to Australia in 1988. Rudd was appointed Chief of Staff to Wayne Goss who was was elected Premier in 1989.

Kevin Rudd took up his own political career when he stood as a candidate for the seat of Griffith in the 1996 Federal Election. At first he was not successful but he eventually won the seat in 1998. Rudd was promoted to the Opposition front bench following the 2001 election and appointed Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs.

On 4 December 2006 Rudd was elected Leader of the Australian Labor Party. Following success in the November 2007 Federal Election, Kevin Rudd was sworn in as Prime Minister on 3 December 2007.
