Biography
Cobb & Co was a coach company active in the eastern states of Australia, 1854 - 1929. Companies with some contact to main company operated in New Zealand, Japan, Sth Africa, South Australia and Western Australia. Cobb & Co had coach routes all over Victoria, NSW and QLD. There were major offices in Melbourne, Bathurst and Brisbane. Cobb & Co had coach building workshops at various times in Castlemaine, Bathurst, Hay, Bourke, Brisbane and Charleville.
The company was started by Americans Freeman Cobb, John Murray Peck, James Swanton and James Lamber. The original members sold out in the 1850s, although Peck stayed in coaching for while before becoming a stock agent in the 1850s. Names associated with Cobb & Co in Victoria are Alex Robertson and John Wagner, Cyrus Hewitt and George Watson, Hoyt Brothers, Cole Brothers, FB Clapp. Cobb & Co in NSW and QLD was largely controlled by James Rutherford, Frank Whitney, and Walter Russell Hall. Hiram Barnes and Tom Gallagher were well known drivers and managers in Queensland.
