John Patrick Shanahan AO RFD

Biography
His Honour John Patrick Shanahan AO RFD was born in Brisbane in 1929. He attended school at Sisters of Mercy, Bowen Hills and St Columban's Christian Brothers' College before studying law at The University of Queensland. He graduated in 1951 and began to practice in Brisbane until 1960 when he was encouraged to move to Townsville to help his career. He served in the Vietnam War as an Officer in 1969.

He was appointed a Judge to the District Court in 1972 and was the first resident District Judge in Rockhampton. He became the Chief Judge of the District Courts in 1994. He retired from the Court in 1999. He retired from the Army Reserve with the rank of Colonel in 1984 and in 2002, Judge Shanahan was awarded the Order of Australia, General Division. He died in April 2012.
