History and use
This Queensland Flag was gifted to the Brisbane Girls Club in May 1916 by the 6th Field Engineers, AIF, accompanied by a group portrait of the battalion and a certificate signed by individual members who were predominantly Queenslanders. The certificate gives thanks for 1915 Christmas gifts sent by the Brisbane Girls Club. The Girls Club was established about 1915 to raise funds to provide comfort for men abroad. They also helped men locally, for example for Easter in 1916 they supplied fish and butter to men in camp in Brisbane. Overall, they raised £4000 from 1915 to 1919. The collection was kept by Brisbane Girls Club member Murielle Jean Brewer. It was donated to Qld Museum along with items collected by her husband Frank Brewer, who served overseas during the First World War.
